Pet Age Calculator

Convert your dog or cat's age into the equivalent in human years — using size-aware modern formulas, not the old 7× myth.

What it means

About this calculator.

Forget the 7× rule

The "one dog year = seven human years" idea has been wrong since the 1950s. Dogs age fast their first two years (a 1-year-old dog is more like a 15-year-old human), then slow down — and bigger breeds age faster than smaller ones. This calculator uses a piecewise size-aware formula that mirrors current veterinary guidance.

Cats are simpler

Cats follow a flatter curve: ~15 human years in year one, ~9 in year two, then ~4 per cat year thereafter. Less size variability means one curve works for almost all domestic cats.

FAQ

Questions people usually have.

What about mixed-breed dogs?

Pick the size category that matches their adult weight. Lineage and breed-specific health issues matter more than this calculator can express — talk to your vet for life-stage-specific advice.

How accurate is the lifespan estimate?

It's a rough average. Many indoor cats live to 18–20+. Small dogs frequently make it past 14. Treat "years remaining" as the middle of a wide bell curve.
