What it means

About this calculator.

What BMI is — and isn't

BMI is a quick screening number for body weight relative to height. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition, so very muscular people often score high on BMI without being unhealthy. Use it as a starting point, not a diagnosis.

The standard categories

Under 18.5 is classified as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal weight, 25–29.9 as overweight, and 30+ as obese (with sub-classes I, II, III). These thresholds come from the World Health Organization and apply to adults aged 20+.

FAQ

Questions people usually have.

Why does the calculator use feet and inches?

US-focused defaults. If you have metric numbers handy: 1 kg ≈ 2.205 lbs, 1 cm = 0.3937 in. Convert and enter.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not particularly. Lean muscle is dense, so a fit athlete may BMI out as 'overweight' without carrying excess fat. Body fat percentage is a better measure for athletic populations.
